The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has called on Nigerians to reaffirm their commitment to democratic principles, active citizenship, national unity, and responsible participation in governance as the country commemorates Democracy Day.
Director-General of the NOA, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, made the call in a Democracy Day message, describing June 12 as a historic symbol of the resilience, courage, and determination of Nigerians in their quest for democratic governance and the protection of fundamental rights and freedoms.
According to him, democracy remains the most inclusive and accountable system of government, providing citizens with the opportunity to freely choose their leaders, hold public officials accountable, and participate meaningfully in national affairs.
“Today, we celebrate not only the heroes and heroines who made sacrifices for the enthronement of democracy in Nigeria, but also the enduring spirit of the Nigerian people who continue to uphold democratic ideals despite various challenges. Democracy gives every citizen a voice and offers the best platform for peaceful national development, social justice, and economic progress,” he said.
Issa-Onilu emphasized that democracy extends beyond periodic elections, stressing that it requires continuous citizen engagement, respect for the rule of law, tolerance of diverse opinions, civic responsibility, and commitment to the collective good.
He urged Nigerians, particularly young people, to reject misinformation, political violence, hate speech, and other actions capable of undermining national cohesion and democratic institutions.
The NOA Director-General reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to promoting civic values, patriotism, and national consciousness through sustained voter and civic education, public enlightenment campaigns, community engagement, and advocacy for responsible citizenship.
“As the agency charged with promoting civic values, patriotism, and national consciousness, the National Orientation Agency remains committed to strengthening democratic culture through sustained voter and civic education, public enlightenment, community engagement, and advocacy for responsible citizenship,” he stated.
Issa-Onilu also commended government institutions, civil society organisations, traditional rulers, religious leaders, the media, and development partners for their contributions to democratic governance and peaceful coexistence across the country.
He called on all Nigerians to use the occasion of Democracy Day to renew their faith in the nation’s democratic journey and work collectively towards building a more united, peaceful, and prosperous Nigeria.
