The National Examinations Council, NECO, says more than 35 million candidates have participated in its various examinations over the past 25 years, highlighting the Council’s growing role in educational assessment and national development.
Registrar and Chief Executive of NECO, Professor Dantani Wushishi, disclosed this during the Gala and Awards Night held as part of activities marking the Council’s 25th anniversary celebration in Abuja.
Wushishi who spoke on on the theme, “Celebrating 25 Years of NECO’s Excellence in Educational Assessment,”said the establishment of NECO followed recommendations by several government panels and committees which stressed the need for a national examination body capable of addressing Nigeria’s growing educational demands.
The NECO Registrar reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to maintaining high standards in examination administration through the deployment of modern technology, stronger collaboration with stakeholders, and sustained investment in human capital and institutional processes.
As part of the anniversary celebration, NECO conferred its highest honour, the Lifetime Achievement Award, on Emeritus Professor Dibu Ojerinde for his visionary leadership and pioneering role in establishing and stabilising the Council in its formative years.
The Council also honoured top performing schools in the Senior School Certificate Examination, SSCE Internal, as well as state governments and other stakeholders who have contributed to the success of its operations over the years.
