FG Moves to Actionable Implementation; Inaugurates Strategic Defence Committees

The Federal Government has transitioned from policy planning to active execution with the inauguration of three strategic technical committees designed to overhaul Nigeria’s border security, military investment, and veterans’ welfare.

The Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd), inaugurated the panels on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at the Ministry’s “Ship House” headquarters, signaling a shift toward a more technology-driven and welfare-oriented defence architecture.

Prioritizing “Smart” Borders and Long-Term Planning

General Musa emphasized that the current security climate demands a move away from manual processes toward “Smart,” intelligence-driven solutions. The three committees are tasked with the following mandates:

  • Integrated Border Security System: Tasked with creating a framework for real-time information sharing and interoperability across Nigeria’s land and maritime boundaries to close existing operational gaps.
  • Defence Sector Capital Requirements Plan: Charged with developing a 5–10 year costed investment framework. This plan aims to align military infrastructure and capability upgrades with national fiscal realities and emerging technological threats.
  • Veterans Welfare and Institutional Reform: Focused on strengthening support systems and introducing a standardized national dress code for veterans to restore institutional dignity and align with global military standards.

Commitment to Transparency and Urgency

The Minister underscored that the committees must prioritize “value for money” and accountability, ensuring that all recommendations are practical and implementable.

”The establishment of these committees reflects a deliberate and coordinated effort to address evolving security challenges and ensure that those who have served the nation are accorded the dignity they deserve,” Gen. Musa stated.

One-Month Deadline

All committees have been given a 30-day timeline to submit comprehensive reports, including actionable roadmaps for immediate implementation.

Permanent Secretary Mr. Richard Pheelangwah added that the leadership remains resolute in supporting the welfare of officers and veterans, urging committee members to treat the assignment as a high-stakes call to national service.
