Nigeria At 61: Corruption Tops Lawyers’ Appraisal of Justice Sector

As Nigeria celebrates it’s sixty one years anniversary ,issues of corruption, delay of trials among others tops discuss in assessment of the Justice sector by legal practitioners. For them, challenges of Governance structures,societal ills and mismanagement of the nations resources by the ruling elites are some of the attributing factors responsible for corrupt practices in the judiciary. Speaking with Channel Network Afrique, the analysts cited the conviction of the former Chief Justice of Nigeria, justice Walter Onnoghen on corruption and other arrests and prosecution of judges as indications that the arm of government has not fared well in the axiom that justice is blind. They were however quick to add that the judiciary irrespective of it’s challenges has also added value to good governance in the last 61 years of nationhood under the circumstances it has operated. Other Issues relating to conflicting court judgements, unnecessary adjournments were also played up by the legal experts who regretted their negative impact to the nation’s jurisprudence. The analysts further noted that it is not yet uhuru for the nation’s justice system as like every other government institutions confronted with one challenge or the other,there is still room for improvement.
