A human rights lawyer, Malcolm Omirhobo has filed a suit before a Federal High Court in Abuja seeking for an order that will allow Nigerians bear firearms for self defence. Omirhobo made true his threat to sue president Muhammadu Buhari after applying to own an assault rifle for self defence but was denied the application by the relevant authorities. The human rights lawyer is seeking the rights to own gun by Nigerians who desired it due to the increasing rate of armed banditry and kidnapping in the country. The plaintiff named Buhari and the 36 State governors and their attorneys general as defendants in the suit which has not been assigned to any judge for hearing. Among orders of the court being sought by the plaintiff include to expunge some part of the provisions of Sections 3, 4, and 35 of the Fire Arms Act, Laws of the Federation, 2004 which gives the president the discretion to grant and revoke gun licenses of Nigerians without going through the National Assembly.
