ECOWAS Parliament Steps Up Discussion On Energy Efficiency, Infrastructure, Poverty Reduction
The Economic Community Of West African States (ECOWAS) parliament has finalized plans to tackle energy shortfall in the West African sub-region.
A statement made available to Channel Network Afrique, CNA states that the delocalized meeting of its joint committee on energy and mines, industry and private sector, agriculture environment and natural resources and infrastructure in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, will prioritize the issue of energy deficiency.
The statement also said the objective of the meeting was to keep the sub-regional lawmakers informed on the community’s action in terms of energy efficiency and in the context of the persistence of the Corona Virus Disease Pandemic where experts in the industry would take the members of parliament through relevant topics related to energy efficiency in the sub-region.
The statement which noted that the intention of the regional legislature is to mobilize resources to tackle the energy deficit emphasised that in view of the parliament’s responsibility in decision-making process of the community, it is aware of the challenges linked to the energy performance of the region.
Meanwhile, the acting Executive Director, ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Bah Saho in his presentation said West Africa has huge potential for renewable energy and private investment despite
stunted growth in the region.
The theme, of the localized meeting is “Ensuring energy efficiency in West Africa with emphasis on the active involvement of the private sector and citizen’s participation”.
