The federal Government has presented provisional licenses to twenty new private universities. The federal executive council government had on February 2021, approved the establishment of 20 new private universities. The Minister of education, Adamu Adamu in his remark said the approval of the universities which now brings to 99 private tertiary institutions in Nigeria is part of efforts to address challenges of access to university education and enrolment of students in excess of carrying capacity by existing ivory towers. Represented by the Minister of state, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, Adamu urged the proprietors of the institutions to live up to the standard put in place by the National Universities Commission, insisting that quality assurance should not be compromised. Earlier, the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Abubakar Rasheed warned proprietors of the institutions that the Commission will not tolerate any unwholesome practices outside its guideline. Some of new private universities includes Topfaith University Mkpatak, Akwa Ibom, Ave Maria University, Piyanko, Nasarawa, Mudiame University, Irrua, Edo, Claretian University of Nigeria, Nekede, Imo, James Hope University, Lagos and Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria, Kano.
