EU Restates Commitment on Okonjo-Iweala’s WTO Headship As Buhari Express Optimism

The European Union has again expressed its support for the Former Nigeria’s Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala to emerge as the next Director General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) despite the refusal of her candidacy by the United States of America.

President of the European Council, Mr. Charles Michel, gave the assurance at a video conference with President Muhammadu Buhari
who is leading Nigeria’s charge for the history making Okonjo-Iweala, the first Black and female to head the WTO.

In a statement signed by the Special Adviser to the President on Media, Femi Adesina made available to Channel Network Afrique, President Buhari thanked the European Council for its support for Nigeria’s candidate.

The President also seized the opportunity to discuss issues bordering on debt relief for Africa, EU-African relations and recharge of the Lake Chad, which has currently shrunk to less than one-third of its usual size, and throwing about 130 million people who depend on the Lake into dire straits.

President Buhari who expressed appreciation to Mr Michel for expected positive developments on the issues said recharge of the Lake Chad is an issue the Nigerian Government has vigorously canvassed at diverse global fora in recent time.
