JAMB Warns Universities Against Issuing Admission Letters

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has warned universities and other tertiary institutions against issuing admission letters to candidates, insisting that the responsibility rests solely with the Board.

JAMB Registrar, Prof. Segun Aina, gave the warning on Thursday, October 15, 2026, when he received a delegation from Veritas University, Bwari, Abuja, during a courtesy visit to his office.

According to Aina, JAMB is the only body statutorily empowered to issue official admission letters to candidates seeking admission into tertiary institutions in Nigeria, including universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.

He expressed concern that candidates often regard admission documents issued by institutions as genuine offers of admission, even when such documents do not constitute official admission letters recognised by the Board.

The Registrar, therefore, urged universities engaging in the practice to desist and ensure that candidates obtain the appropriate admission documents from JAMB.

He recalled that the Federal Ministry of Education had directed that all admissions into tertiary institutions be processed through the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS), stressing that any admission process conducted outside the platform is illegal and invalid.

Aina further explained that institutions were not permitted to substitute their own letters for the official JAMB admission letter, which is issued after candidates accept their admission offers on CAPS.

He added that only admissions recognised through CAPS would be accepted for purposes such as mobilisation for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
