As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to commemorate the 2026 United Nations International Day of Peace, the National Unity and Peace Corps, NUPEC, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to assent to the proposed National Mines Rangers legislation when it reaches his desk.
NUPEC says the establishment of a specialised Mines Rangers service will strengthen efforts to combat illegal mining and crimes associated with the unlawful exploitation of Nigeria’s mineral resources.
The International Day of Peace is observed annually on September 21 to promote the ideals of peace, non-violence and a global ceasefire.
Addressing a news conference in Abuja, the Commandant General of NUPEC and the Nigeria Mines Ranger Services, Dr Chinedu Nneji, said a properly regulated and professional Mines Rangers service would strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to tackle illegal mining and protect the country’s mineral resources.
Speaking on the relevance of the Peace day, Nneji urged Nigerians to make peace a daily commitment through dialogue, education, justice, unity and the creation of opportunities for young people.
The NUPEC Commandant General also called on Nigerians to support President Tinubu’s bid for a second term, saying the gesture would enable the administration to continue its ongoing efforts to reposition the country
