Tinubu’s Administration Boosts EKEDC, IKEDC Networks with 840MVA Power Transformers​

​The Minister of Power, Engr. Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, has commissioned seven 132/33kV power transformers and one 330kV power transformer project across four transmission substations in Lagos State to expand bulk power transmission capacity.

The installations located at Apapa, Ijora, Alausa, and Lekki were inaugurated on Monday, August 17, and Tuesday, August 18, 2026.


​The projects have added 540MVA transformer capacity at the 132kV voltage level (capable of wheeling 432MW) and 300MVA capacity at the 330kV level (transmitting an additional 240MW), bringing the total new installed transformer capacity to 840MVA across the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) network in Lagos.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremonies, Engr. Tegbe highlighted that the strategic placement of the projects aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive to prioritize electricity infrastructure in high-value production and industrial zones.

​”Lekki represents the Nigeria we are building towards more industrial, more commercially active, more connected to global markets,” Tegbe noted, stressing that the nine new 33kV feeders delivered at Lekki will prevent stranded capacity and ensure proper power evacuation to the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) network.

​Addressing the Alausa installation, delivered in partnership with Shanghai Electric Ltd under a World Bank initiative, the Minister described the project as a targeted strengthening of key administrative and commercial centers within the Ikeja Electric (IKEDC) franchise.

​The Apapa 2x60MVA GIS project was funded under the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Official Development Assistance scheme, featuring modern Gas Insulated Switchgear and Substation Automation Systems to monitor critical maritime and logistics infrastructure.

​Managing Director and CEO of TCN, Engr. Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, confirmed that the upgrades would stabilize grid operations, mitigate technical transmission losses, and optimize bulk power delivery to both EKEDC and IKEDC. Abdulaziz added that TCN has completed similar capacity-expansion projects across other states, which will be commissioned in due course.
