Accord Denies Leadership Crisis, Dismisses Imumolen’s INEC Protest As “Baseless”
The Accord Party
has dismissed claims of internal division, describing recent actions by a former member as misleading and unfounded.
The party was reacting to a protest staged on April 21, 2026, at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Abuja by its expelled 2023 presidential candidate, Prof. Christopher Imumolen.
Imumolen had sought recognition as the party’s national chairman, reportedly citing a court order.
In a statement issued by its National Chairman, Barr. Maxwell Mgbuden, Accord described the development as a “publicity stunt” lacking legal basis.
The party maintained that there is no leadership dispute or faction within its ranks and that no court ruling supports Imumolen’s claim.
According to the statement, the only court order previously referenced by Imumolen was an ex parte order obtained on August 3, 2024.
However, the Accord leadership noted that the order was vacated on September 2, 2024, by Justice M. M. Adamu of the FCT High Court, who ruled that it had lapsed after seven days and directed parties to maintain the status quo.
The party further cited a subsequent ruling delivered on July 17, 2025, by Justice F. A. Aliyu, who struck out the case for lack of jurisdiction. The court held that the matter constituted a non justiciable intra party dispute and nullified all pending applications and interim orders.
Accord stated that this judgment effectively resolved any claims to leadership by Imumolen, urging the public and prospective members to disregard assertions suggesting otherwise.
The party reiterated its support for Barr. Mgbuden as its legitimate national chairman and emphasized that its members remain united. It also distanced itself from the April 21 protest, noting that it did not originate from the party.
Accord said it is focused on the upcoming governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun states, as well as the 2027 general election, expressing confidence in its growing support base.
