24

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, says it has concluded preparations for the 2026 Federal Capital Territory Area Council Elections scheduled for Saturday, 21st February.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja, the INEC Chairman said the successful conduct of the election is a shared responsibility involving political parties, candidates, security agencies, civil society organisations and the media.

He gave a breakdown of the 1.6 million registered voters expected to participate in the poll across the six Area Councils of the FCT and warned against any attempt to undermine the electoral process.

The INEC Chairman also expressed concern over the persistent trend of vote buying that has characterised the nation’s electoral process and warned that the Commission is working closely with security agencies to ensure that anyone caught engaging in vote trading will be arrested and prosecuted to serve as a deterrent.

The meeting was attended by key stakeholders in the FCT, including the Commissioner of Police, Dantawaye Miller, who assured residents of adequate security and a hitch-free exercise.

More than 1.6 million voters are expected to elect leaders across the six Area Councils of the FCT as INEC says it stands ready to deliver a transparent, credible and peaceful poll.
