NSCDC, Ivory Tower, Experts Urge Nigerian Youths To Embrace Peace, Dev’t

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has called on Nigerian youths to prioritize peace and development in the country.

NSCDC FCT Commandant, Dr. Olusola Odumosu, who made the call during a symposium at the University of Abuja with the theme “Advancing Peace Through the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)” said genuine peace is built on justice, opportunity, and inclusion.

Dr. Odumosu while urging students to translate advocacy into concrete action emphasized the critical role of Nigerian youths in promoting peace and ensuring national development, particularly in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The NSCDC FCT Commandant urged political actors to focus on discussing issues rather than individuals, promoting national unity and progress.

The Vice Chancellor, University of Abuja, Prof Mathew Adamu, on his part expressed strong support for Nigeria’s call for a permanent seat at the United Nations.

He cited the country’s long-standing contributions to global peacekeeping and conflict resolution.

The University don emphasised that lasting peace must begin at home and be anchored on justice, fairness, and inclusion.

Dr. Ukoha Ukiwo, a UK partner of the SPRING Programme, highlighted that inequality, poverty, among other variable fuel social unrest, deepen societal divisions, and weaken youth empowerment, a crucial element for nation-building.

Dr. Bala Yusuf Yunusa from the SDGs Office stressed the need to address inequality and poor education to reduce conflicts and foster sustainable peace.

He emphasized that inequality, poverty, and limited access to quality education are significant obstacles to achieving peace and sustainable development.

On their parts, Professors Sadiq Abba and Patricia Taiwo stressed the importance of strengthening civic responsibility and establishing resilient institutions to sustain peace at all levels.
