INEC Clarifies EU,Partners Funding Of Electoral Activities.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it does not receive direct funding from the European Union or other partners for core electoral activities.

INEC chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu made the clarification when the EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot visited the Commissions headquarters in Abuja.

Prof Yakubu who said the clarification comes against the backdrop of growing public interest on how INEC manages its funding and partnerships, noted that electoral activities like voter registration, production of PVCs, training and remuneration of ad hoc staff among others remain the sovereign responsibility of the Federal Government of Nigeria.

The INEC chairman who lauded the EU for its various interventions aimed at consoliding the democratic process in Nigeria, highlighted ongoing efforts by the commission to further strengthen the process.

Earlier in his remarks, the EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot assured of the EU support for Nigeria’s democracy as well respect for its sovereignty.

The visit marked Ambassador Mignot’s first official engagement in Nigeria since his assumption of office on January 24, 2025.
