The International Day of the Girl Child is a global event commemorated yearly on 11th October.
The day focuses attention on the need to address the challenges girls face and to promote girls’ empowerment and the fulfilment of their human rights.
As part of activities lined up to celebrate the day in Abuja, a civil society Organisation, Axis of Hope initiative visited Government secondary school,Kubwa,a suburb in the Federal Capital Territory.
According to the Founder of the CSO, Bar Maxwell Mgbudem, the purpose of the visit is to educate the girls on their rights and help them understand what it means to be a girl child.
Meanwhile, the Guest speaker and Legal counsel of the group, Bar Penninah Ugonyork who spoke on the theme “Girls Vision for the future: safe and empowered” highlighted some of the challenges girls face in their formative years into adulthood and the need for urgent action as they mature into women.
Some of the Girls commended the Group for the initiative especially as it aims to stimulate awareness and public enlightenment on their right to a safe and secured environment.
Other takeaways from the occasion include the promise by the Group to cover WAEC expenses of all indigent students in the school.
The theme of the 2024 International Girl child day is “Girls Vision for the future.
