U.S. Envoys Make Case For Women, PWDs In Break Dance Sports

Breaking is an urban dance style with its origin traced to the United States in the 1970s but quickly adopted as a global dance pattern in the 1990s.

Only recently, breaking was infused as one of the sports to be competed for at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

To promote and encourage breaking in Nigeria, the Public Diplomacy Section of the United States Embassy, Abuja and the FAME foundation organised a three day dance-clinic and masterclass for participants of the Northern and Southern region to be done separately.

Speaking at the grand finale of the northern region’s break dance sports, the Nigeria’s Minister of Sports, John Enoh, represented by one of his aides, Orok Effanga expressed government’s commitment to promoting the sport.

The two U.S. break dance Sports Envoys, Macca Malik and Jacob “Kujo” Lyons spoke on their mission to bring visibility to women in a male dominated sport as well as Persons With Disabilities.

The convener of the clinic, Aderonke Bello highlighted drives behind her break dance sports project. Track Up High point of the occasion was the dance performance by the participants and the exhibition performance by the coaches.

The U.S. break dance Sports Envoys and other members of the team have left Abuja for Lagos to commence the three day break dance sports coaching for the southern region of the country.
