AFCON 2023: Envoy Urges Nigerians In South Africa To Be Vigilant Ahead of Clash
Ahead of the highly anticipated AFCON semi-final match between the Super Eagles and Bafana Bafana, the Nigerian High Commission in South Africa has issued an advisory urging Nigerians residing in the country to exercise caution and be mindful of their conduct.
This was contained in an advisory made available to Channel Network Afrique, CNA.
According to the advisory, the caution was as a result of “potentially inflammatory online comments” made by some South African citizens, expressing hostility towards Nigerians in the context of the upcoming soccer match.
The comments reportedly referenced “showing pepper” to Nigerians and celebrating Bafana Bafana’s potential loss in a negative manner.
It advisory called on Nigerians to be cautious about their surroundings, especially when choosing public places to watch the match.
The High Commission also advised Nigerians to maintain their usual good conduct and avoid loud, riotous, or provocative celebrations, particularly if the Super Eagles win.
The advisory which emphasised on need to maintaining law-abiding behavior before, during, and after the match said in case of any provocation or harassment, Nigerians are advised to avoid responding and immediately seek assistance from the High Commission or relevant authorities.
Acknowledging the potential risks, the High Commission also emphasized the importance of fostering positive engagement and sportsmanship throughout the match.
“Let us all enjoy the beautiful game in the spirit of healthy competition and camaraderie,” the advisory stated.
The advisory does not however, mention specific instances of violence or threats, suggesting the online comments may be more rhetoric than actionable intent.
It further highlighted the importance of proactive measures to ensure the safety and well-being of Nigerians in South Africa during the high-charged event as Nigerians in South Africa can contribute to a positive and enjoyable experience for all during the AFCON match.
