The Chairman,Senate Committee on Population and National Identity Management, Senator Abdul Ningi has called on the federal government to give it’s nod for the conduct of the census exercise.
The lawmaker, who was speaking at the 2023 edition of the Annual Population Lecture series held in Abuja advocated reasons for the exercise to be conducted as soon as possible.
Lamenting the inability of Nigeria to conduct the Housing and population census since 2006, Senator Ningi emphasised the need for a change of narrative especially as data generated from the exercise helps the government to plan for the wellbeing of the citizens.
Earlier, in his welcome remarks, the Chairman of the National Population Commission, Hon Isa Kwarra described the Annual Population Lecture Series as a platform to foster informed dialogues, spark innovative ideas, and catalyze actions that contribute to the well-being and progress of Nigeria.
This year edition of the APLS was delivered by Prof Olarenwaju Olaniyan who in his remarks canvassedna conversation on the importance of population to the socio economic development of any nation.
The highpoint of the ceremony was the launch of the compendium of the Annual Population Lecture Series 1 to 10.
The theme of the 2023 APLS is “a decade of dialogue on Population and Development in Nigeria”.
