According to the World Health Organisation, visual impairment is a significant health problem in the African Region with major eye conditions that includes cataracts, uncorrected refractive errors, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, among other eye related problems.
Statistics indicates that 26.3 million people in the African region have a form of visual impairment of which 20.4 million have low vision and 5.9 million are estimated to be blind.
The good news is that the emergence of technology and innovations are fast changing the narrative as more than 80 percent of eye problems are preventable.
However, majority of person’s with eye defects are yet to take advantage of the success story due to ignorance.
This may not be far from reasons why the Lions Club International Multiple Council is soliciting for support from various key stakeholders including the government for establishment of an eye hospital.
Speaking at a news conference in to unveil it’s 16th multiple district annual convention in Abuja, the District Governor 404 A2, Lions club international, Asiwaju Bello reiterated their commitment to service to humanity.
The theme of the 16th Multiple District Annual Convention as ” Serving in Unity”.
