Former Lagos State Governor and National Leader of the All Progressive Congress, Senator Bola Tinubu has emerged as the presidential candidate of the ruling party in the 2023 elections Tinubu pulled a total of 1,271 votes to defeat former minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi who garnered 316 votes, leaving vice president Yemi Osibanjo who came a distant third with 235 votes.
Other aspirants with their scores include,senate president Ahmed Lawal152 votes, Governors Yahaya Bello 47,Dave Umahi 38,Ben Ayade 37 among others. As expected the APC special convention was not without the usual politicking and negotiations resulting to 7 aspirants including Governor Kayode Fayemo,Former Governor Godswil Akpabio, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, former speaker of the House of Representatives Dimeji Bankole and others stepping down for Ashiwaju Tinubu.
This no doubt influenced the required votes for Tinubu to secure the APC ticket as it’s standard bearer in next year’s presidential election. Elated Tinubu in his acceptance speech commended the process and urged other aspirants and Nigerians to join him in the task ahead. He promised to add bite to the efforts by the present administration to address critical challenges in the nations key sectors.
Earlier, President Mohammadu Buhari in his remarks urged party officials and delegates to follow due process and abide by all extant laws and regulations pertaining to election of the party flag bearer. Also, the National Chairman of the party, Abdullahi Adamu Had urged the delegates to elect a flag bearer with unblemished record who can secure victory for the party Over 2,322 delegates attended the special convention held at the Eagle Square complex in Abuja.
