Former Nigeria’s Vice President, Atiku Abubakar has won the Peoples Democratic Party primary election by 371 votes to emerge as the party’s Presidential flag bearer for the 2023 election after defeating his closest rival, Rivers State Governor, Nyesome Wike who secured 237 votes at the PDP 2022 National convention.
\The 2019 Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, and 13 other contestants battled for the PDP’s ticket at the party’s Presidential Primary Election held inside the Velodrome of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
As expected the contest did not fail to witness the usual political horse trading and maneuvering as a major contender in the race, Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal stepped down for the Adamawa born politician, Atiku few minutes into the commencement of the election.
The move which helped to swing the required votes for Atiku who before then was in head to head contest with Governor Wike no doubt played out in facilitating his victory as the PDP standard bearer for next year’s general elections.
Atiku in his acceptance speech called on all aggrieved persons in the party to sheath their sword and join him in the task of unifying the country.
Former president of the Senate, Bukola Saraki came distant third with 70 votes, followed by Akwa Ibom State Governor, Emmanuel Udom who garnered 38 votes, Bauchi State governor Bala Mohammed pulled 20 votes , as former President of the Senate, Pius Anyim got only 14 votes.
With the conclusion of the PDP presidential primary election, the coast is now cleared for Atiku to enter in to the race for Nigeria’s presidency for a record sixth time.
