Troops of the 29 Task Force Brigade under Operation HADIN KAI successfully repelled a major terrorist attack on their headquarters in Benisheikh, Borno State, early Thursday morning.
The encounter, which began around 12:30 am on April 9, 2026, saw insurgents attempt to breach the defensive perimeter of the military installation. According to a statement released by Major General Michael Onoja, Director of Defence Media Operations, the troops—led by Brigadier General Oseni Braimah—engaged the attackers with “superior firepower,” forcing the insurgents to retreat in disarray.
Casualties and Operational Response
While the military successfully defended the position, the Defence Headquarters confirmed that a few soldiers were killed during the heavy exchange of fire.
”Regrettably, the encounter resulted in the loss of a few brave and gallant soldiers who paid the supreme price in the line of duty,” the statement read.
The Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Olatunbosun Oluyede, expressed his condolences to the families of the fallen, noting that their heroism remains a source of pride for the nation. The military has requested that the public and media refrain from circulating unverified information or names of the deceased until the next of kin have been formally notified.
Ongoing Security Measures
Military officials described the assault as an act of desperation by terrorist elements who have suffered significant losses in recent months. In the aftermath of the failed breach, the following actions are being taken:
Exploitation Operations: Troops are currently conducting clearance missions in the Benisheikh area to track and neutralize fleeing insurgents.
Intelligence Gathering: Security forces are working to ensure no regrouping occurs in the North-East theatre.
Public Vigilance: Citizens are urged to remain calm and provide credible information to aid the ongoing counter-insurgency efforts.
The Defence Headquarters reaffirmed its commitment to restoring peace in the region, stating that the Armed Forces remain “resolute and undeterred” in the face of such provocations. Further updates are expected as exploitation operations continue.
