TCN Unveils In-House Analytics Platform To Track Grid Outages, Expose ₦720m Feeder Losses

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has unveiled a new in house Load & Outage Analytics platform capable of turning fragmented transmission data into real time operational intelligence, in a move aimed at improving grid stability, reducing outages and strengthening accountability across Nigeria’s electricity supply chain.

The platform, developed entirely by TCN’s Operations Department, was demonstrated on Wednesday, August 26, at the company’s Corporate Headquarters in Abuja.

The technology comes against the backdrop of significant transmission related losses and persistent challenges in outage reporting, which TCN officials said have historically relied on scattered spreadsheets, slow manual compilation and inconsistent reliability calculations.

Presenting the platform, the General Manager, Operations, Engr. Godwin Afamefuna Aguiyi, said the existing reporting process could take days to produce information needed by management to make critical operational decisions.

The new Streamlit based application contains 13 modules and provides detailed views of loads and outages by region, station, transformer and feeder. It automatically classifies outages, generates reliability key performance indicators and produces management and board ready reports within minutes.

The company also introduces role based access, structured data uploads and audit trails, with individual user credentials replacing shared logins and unmanaged spreadsheet access.

The scale of the challenge was highlighted with July 2026 data presented during the demonstration.

According to the figures submitted by TCN’s regional teams, 3,714 outages were recorded nationwide during the month, resulting in 48,603 megawatt hours (MWh) of load lost.

The Lagos region alone accounted for 20,693 MWh of the recorded load loss, alongside 572 emergency outages, 306 forced outages and 129 planned outages.

The analysis further identified 22 feeders that exceeded allowable outage hours, with losses valued at ₦720.33 million.

One of the examples cited was the OBOSI feeder in Onitsha, which recorded a loss of 1,063.74 MWh at Band A rates.

TCN stressed, however, that the July figures presented at the demonstration represent raw field submissions from regional teams and are intended for cross referencing against the Nigerian Independent System Operator’s (NISO) official release for the same period.

The company also clarified that the 33kV feeder level outage data presented relates specifically to the load and outage segment for which TCN is accountable, distinct from the portion attributable to Distribution Companies (DisCos).

According to Aguiyi, the platform incorporates the Fault Attribution Ratio (FAR), providing a framework for determining responsibility for service interruptions between TCN and DisCos.

Under the applicable Service Level Agreement, TCN’s allowable downtime responsibility is 30 percent, while DisCos account for 70 percent. The allocation, however, is not a blanket 30:70 split for every outage, as individual incidents are attributed according to the identified fault type and responsible network segment.

The system is expected to strengthen accountability by making it easier to establish the source of interruptions and assign responsibility.

Opening the technical session on behalf of TCN’s Managing Director/CEO, Engr. Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, the General Manager, Project Coordination, Engr. Aminu Tahir, commended the Operations Department for developing the technology.

He said the platform was already providing greater visibility of the transmission network, even though the full system had yet to be deployed.

Tahir identified technical and commercial losses as major concerns affecting TCN’s performance, stressing the importance of better load management, supply demand matching and grid stability.

He said improved understanding and control of the transmission system would help reduce outages, improve operational efficiency and lower the costs associated with prolonged interruptions.

The platform’s development is also notable because it was conceived and built internally by the Operations Department less than a year after the establishment of TCN’s Transmission Service Operator (TSO) department, highlighting the company’s growing internal technical capacity.

TCN said that, if fully deployed alongside the required interface energy measurement devices, the system could also support monitoring of the Transmission Losses Factor (TLF) across the network.

The Operations Department recommended nationwide deployment of the platform, integration with Internet of Things (IoT) technology for real time data capture, and upgrades to infrastructure including computer systems, display screens and internet connectivity at transmission stations.

The Executive Director, Human Resources & Corporate Services, Mrs. Abiodun Afolabi Fadahunsi, meanwhile, reaffirmed management’s commitment to equipping engineers and system operators with the tools required to maintain national grid stability.

She said management was monitoring daily grid reports and would continue providing technical teams with the resources needed to address operational challenges in real time.

The unveiling represents a potentially significant digital transformation in Nigeria’s power sector. By replacing fragmented manual reporting with centralized analytics, TCN aims to move from simply recording outages after they occur to using data to identify patterns, assign responsibility and improve operational decisions.

The success of the initiative, however, will depend on nationwide deployment, adequate digital infrastructure, reliable field data and the cooperation of other stakeholders across the electricity value chain.

For TCN, the immediate promise is clear: faster information, greater visibility and a more accountable transmission network capable of identifying where outages and losses are occurring and how much they cost.
