President Tinubu Urges Unity as APC Nationwide Primaries Begin

34

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to prioritize unity, sportsmanship, and the party’s “firm principles of progressive politics” as nationwide primary elections commence tomorrow.

In a statehouse statement released ahead of the polls, the President described the exercise as a referendum on the party’s resilience. The primaries are scheduled to begin with the House of Representatives contests and will culminate in the presidential primary on May 25, 2026.

Focus on Consensus and Peace

President Tinubu acknowledged ongoing efforts by party leaders to produce consensus candidates in accordance with the Electoral Act (2026). While he commended consensus-building as a tool to reduce “rancour and bad blood,” he emphasized that where such efforts fail, the democratic process must be conducted peacefully.

”Election is an essential ingredient of democracy,” the President stated. “We cannot afford rancorous conduct or the debasement of our democracy and party unity. In every contest, there will be a winner and a loser.”

He further urged:

  • Winners: To avoid gloating and reach out to opponents with “olive branches.”
  • Losers: To maintain sportsmanship and avoid “wrecking the boat.”
  • Leadership: To provide a level playing field for all aspirants regardless of sentiment.

Inclusion and Security

A significant portion of the President’s address focused on the demographic representation of the party. He issued a specific appeal to voters and party headers to give “special consideration” to women and youth, noting that the party cannot afford to relegate these two vital segments of the population.

Addressing the role of law enforcement, the President directed the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to maintain strict professionalism.

”Your duties strictly centre on ensuring peaceful exercise. Nothing more,” Tinubu cautioned, warning against any form of interloping in the internal party process.

Looking Toward the General Election

As the APC enters its fourth election cycle since its formation, the President reminded members that the ultimate goal is success in the general election. He warned that political opponents are “waiting for us to be against each other,” urging the party to remain unified to disappoint such expectations.

The President concluded by wishing all aspirants success and expressing his readiness to work with victorious candidates to ensure the party’s dominance in the upcoming general polls.
