Nigeria and the United Kingdom have agreed to a comprehensive review of their existing defence agreements to better address modern security threats, specifically focusing on counter-terrorism, intelligence sharing, and regional stability.
The agreement was reached on Tuesday during a bilateral meeting at the Ship House in Abuja, where the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd), hosted the UK National Security Adviser (NSA), Jonathan Powell.
According to a statement signed by Leah Katung-Babatunde, Special Adviser (Media) to the Minister of Defence, the upcoming review of the nations’ Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) will aim to modernize security protocols, expand technical training, and enhance capacity-building for the Nigerian Armed Forces.
Reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to the alliance, Gen. Musa emphasized the importance of deepening ties to tackle evolving security challenges, noting that Nigeria highly values its historic and strategic relationship with the UK.
The meeting occurred on the sidelines of the fourth UK-Nigeria Security and Defence Partnership (SDP4) Dialogue. The two-day high-level summit, co-led by Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, and his UK counterpart, Jonathan Powell, successfully established a robust framework for bilateral security cooperation through 2026 and beyond.
