The Nigerian Navy has arrested three suspected associates of a wanted militant kingpin during a raid on an illegal camp in Fununu Community, Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
The operation, executed by personnel from the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Formoso, targeted the network of Sunday Godlaw.
Navy officials link Godlaw and his associates to sea robbery, piracy, and illegal black sand mining in the Niger Delta waterways.
According to a press statement released on Saturday by Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, troops searched the Fununu camp and recovered a firearm alongside tactical equipment.
The items seized include:
One pump-action rifle loaded with two live cartridges
Three AK-47 magazines
Four walkie-talkies
One ballistic vest and two camouflage uniforms
Mobile phones, a power bank, machetes, and a motorcycle
No casualties were recorded during the raid.
While Godlaw and several other gang members managed to flee the site before capture, the Navy transferred the three detained suspects and all recovered evidence to the Bayelsa State Command of the Department of State Services (DSS) on August 7 for further investigation.
Naval authorities reaffirmed their commitment to dismantling criminal hideouts in riverine areas and maintaining security across coastal communities in collaboration with sister security agencies.
