The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has moved to support the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) with its biometric verification technology to strengthen the integrity of the board’s examination processes.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, gave the indication on Friday in Abuja when JAMB Registrar, Prof. Segun Aina, led his management team on a visit to the Commission’s headquarters.
Aina said JAMB approached INEC as a sister agency with proven experience in biometric verification, seeking to leverage the Commission’s technological capacity to improve its own verification systems.
He said JAMB was aware that INEC had biometric verification machines that might no longer be in active use, and appealed to the Commission to consider making the equipment available to the board.
Responding, Amupitan directed INEC’s Director of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) to review the request and conduct a proof-of-concept assessment to determine the availability and suitability of the biometric equipment for possible use by JAMB.
The INEC chairman welcomed the delegation and commended JAMB for its statutory role in national development, describing the board as critical to the education and advancement of Nigerian youths.
Amupitan said INEC’s recent technological deployments during the Anambra election, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council election, Ekiti and Osun governorship elections, as well as bye-elections across the country, demonstrated the Commission’s growing technological capacity.
According to him, the elections were widely commended by observers, including the Office of the National Security Adviser and the United Kingdom High Commission, for their credibility and peaceful conduct.
He described the visit as a demonstration of growing synergy among government agencies, stressing that stronger institutional collaboration was essential to advancing national development.
The INEC chairman also assured the JAMB delegation that the Commission was willing to explore additional areas of cooperation between both agencies.
Aina was accompanied by members of the JAMB management team during the visit.
