The Tinubu Media Volunteers (TMV) has commended the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) for mobilising and disbursing N100 billion in previously unaccessed matching grants to states to support basic education.
In a statement signed by its Chairman, Chukwudi Enekwechi, and Secretary, Segun Ogedengbe, the group said the intervention came despite the failure of some state governments to provide the required counterpart funding needed to access the grants.
TMV said the disbursement aligns with UBEC’s 2025–2031 Strategic Blueprint and reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to improving basic education under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
The group noted that UBEC Executive Secretary, Aisha Garba, recently highlighted the commission’s achievements, including the construction of 4,600 classrooms, renovation of over 6,100 classrooms, provision of 2,780 toilets and 678 boreholes, as well as the distribution of 334,000 pieces of school furniture nationwide.
According to TMV, the release of the N100 billion in unaccessed grants is significant because states are ordinarily required to provide 40 per cent counterpart funding to access the Federal Government’s contribution. It observed that several states had failed to meet this obligation over the years.
The group described the intervention as unprecedented, saying it would strengthen efforts to improve access to quality basic education across the country.
TMV also attributed UBEC’s progress to institutional reforms that have enhanced transparency, project monitoring and data driven decision making, adding that the achievements demonstrate the impact of the Tinubu administration’s reforms in the education sector.
It urged the commission to sustain its commitment to accountability and good governance, while describing the release of the unaccessed grants as a reflection of the Federal Government’s determination to invest in the education of future generations.
