The Federal Government has intensified efforts to address Nigeria’s learning crisis by conducting a nationwide learning assessment to evaluate pupils’ literacy, numeracy and cognitive skills.
Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, disclosed this while monitoring the National Learning Assessment at Government Secondary School, Government Junior Secondary School and Topaz Model Primary School, all in Kuje, Abuja.
He said the assessment would provide critical data to guide reforms in the education sector and strengthen learning outcomes across the country.
In his remarks, the FCT Mandate Secretary for Education, Dr. Danlami Hayyo, commended the Federal Ministry of Education for introducing the nationwide assessment, describing it as a significant step towards improving learning outcomes in schools.
Nigeria has not conducted national learning assessments consistently. The last exercise was carried out by the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) in 2023, while the previous nationwide assessment was conducted by the Federal Ministry of Education in 2019.
