China and Nigeria have celebrated 55 years of diplomatic relations with a joint fashion showcase in Abuja, bringing together designers, models, performers, government officials and stakeholders in the creative industry.

The event featured runway presentations that combined traditional and contemporary fashion from both countries, highlighting cultural exchange and creative collaboration.

Speaking at the event, Yang Jianxing, representing the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Nigeria and the China Cultural Center in Nigeria, described fashion as a cultural language that connects people across borders.

He said the showcase provided a platform for deeper engagement between Chinese and Nigerian cultures, adding that fashion can strengthen people-to-people relations between the two countries.

According to Jianxing, traditional Chinese attire such as Hanfu, Tang-style clothing, Qipao and Mamianqun, as well as Nigerian garments and fabrics including Aso-Oke, Agbada, Buba, Iro and Gele, reflect identity, heritage and social values.

He noted that clothing plays a significant role in festivals, weddings and other celebrations in both countries, and said cultural exchanges in fashion could inspire innovation and contribute to the growth of the creative economy.

Jianxing also described 2026, which marks 55 years of China-Nigeria diplomatic relations and the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges, as an opportunity to deepen mutual understanding and practical cooperation.

In his goodwill message, Gabriel Amudipe, Director of Education Support Services at the Federal Ministry of Education, commended the organisers for creating a platform that promotes learning and cultural exchange among young people.

He said initiatives such as the fashion showcase encourage cross-cultural understanding while providing opportunities for young creatives to demonstrate their talents and expand their professional networks.

The event featured a series of artistic performances and fashion presentations. The National Troupe performed an Afro-contemporary dance, while a segment titled A Journey Through Ancient Fashion explored historical fashion trends.

Another segment, Nigeria Royal Traditions, featured traditional-inspired designs presented by Chinese and Nigerian models. Students of the Chinese language class at the China Cultural Center in Nigeria also performed a dance titled The Wondering Fish.

Runway showcases included The Colours of China, which highlighted Chinese fashion aesthetics, alongside presentations of Nigerian designs and contemporary fusion collections.

Musical performances formed part of the programme, including the Chinese song Journey Through Beautiful China and the Nigerian piece Let’s Go and Make a Change performed by Capital Voice Abuja.

The event concluded with a China-Nigeria fusion collection that blended elements of both cultures into contemporary fashion designs.

Among those in attendance were Abdulkarim Ozi Ibrahim, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Arts, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy; Muazu Hajiya Bintu, Chief Executive Officer of Sygnific Stitches and Fabrics; Jiang Junjie, Deputy Managing Director of CCECC; and Zhang Xinyu, Director-General of the China General Chamber of Commerce in Nigeria.

Jianxing thanked designers, models, performers and partner organisations, including Sygnific Stitches and Fabrics and the China General Chamber of Commerce in Nigeria, for supporting the event.

The fashion showcase highlighted the role of fashion, music and performance in promoting cultural dialogue and strengthening creative collaboration between China and Nigeria.
