The Nigerian Navy has officially commenced a historic fortnight of celebrations to mark its 70th anniversary, tracking its evolution from a modest colonial marine unit into what the Global Fire Power Report of 2026 has judged as the strongest naval fleet on the African continent.
The celebrations, scheduled to run from today May 21 to June 4, 2026, will center in Lagos and span across all naval units and formations nationwide.
Addressing a news conference in Abuja, the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, represented by the Chief of Policy and Plans, Rear Admiral Akinola Olatunde Olodude declared that the platinum jubilee invites the nation to look back with gratitude at a 70-year journey of institutional resilience and strategic adaptability.
He said over seven decades, the Nigerian Navy has expanded its restricted mandate into a formidable force capable of projecting power across the West African sub-region, the Gulf of Guinea, and sub-Saharan Africa.
The Naval boss also highlighted more gains recorded during the period under review.
The celebrations will wrap up with local and international defense exhibitions, a final Sunset Seminar, Dinner and Awards Night at the Naval Dockyard and Eko Convention Centre to honour distinguished personnel.
