The National Librarian/Chief Executive Officer of the National Library of Nigeria, Prof. Chinwe Anunobi, has felicitated Nigerian children and youth on the occasion of the 2026 Children’s Day celebration, urging them to cultivate the habit of reading as a pathway to knowledge, leadership, and national development.
In a goodwill message issued to mark the celebration, Prof. Anunobi congratulated Nigerian children on the special day dedicated to celebrating their innocence, potential, and role as the future of the nation.
According to a statement signed by Vershima Orvell-Dio, Assistant Director, Information and Public Relations, the National Librarian described reading as a powerful tool for self development, critical thinking, and empowerment, encouraging young Nigerians to make it a lifelong habit.
“Reading opens doors to knowledge, opportunity, and leadership,” Prof. Anunobi said. “When you read, you equip yourself with the ideas, skills, and confidence to shape your future and contribute meaningfully to our country.
Let this Children’s Day remind us that every great leader, inventor, and changemaker started with a book.”
She further reassured Nigerian youth that the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, alongside the education policies of the Honourable Minister of Education, are creating expanded opportunities for both formal and non formal learning.
According to her, the policies are designed to ensure that every Nigerian child, regardless of background or location, has access to quality education and the support needed to pursue and achieve their dreams.
Prof. Anunobi also encouraged young people to take advantage of the platforms provided by the National Library of Nigeria, including its nationwide network of book clubs and literacy centres, as well as its physical and virtual resources.
She stressed the importance of reading materials about Nigeria’s history, culture, languages, personalities, and achievements to help young people understand their heritage and prepare adequately for the future.
“The National Library of Nigeria remains committed to being a safe, accessible, and inspiring space for learning. Through our centres and digital platforms, we are bringing books, knowledge, and opportunities closer to you.
I urge you to visit us, join a book club, and read widely, especially Nigerian content that tells your story,” she added.
The National Library of Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to promoting reading culture and lifelong learning across the country in line with national development goals and its 2025–2030 strategic plan.
The library also called for collective efforts towards helping Nigerian children and youth realise their full potential through knowledge and education.
