Nigeria’s Elections: Military Insists, We are Not Politicians But Professionals

Following series of criticism of the conduct of the Nigerian army in the recently concluded Presidential and National Assembly elections, the military top brass has re-assured eligible Voters, observers and the international community of violence free Governorship and States Assembly polls. The Chief of Defence Staff, General Abayomi Olonisakin who gave the assurances at a news conference in Abuja said contrary to wrong perceptions, sections 217 of the Nigeria’s constitution allows the military to support the Nigerian police in maintaining law and order during elections. Represented by the Defence Spokesman Colonel Onyema Nwachukwu, the Defence Chief said, the military will not condone any act of indiscipline by its personnel as such will deal decisively with anyone that contravenes its guidelines and code of Conduct and Rules of Engagement during and after the exercise
