The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control NAFDAC has raised alarm over the importation of fake and counterfeit products into the country through a system known as Groupage. Updating Nigerians on latest activities of the agency to ensure total elimination of fake and unwholesome products from circulation in the country,NAFDAC Director General Prof Mojisola Adeyeye said the system which allows more than 2 persons to load containers with different items from country of origin aids and abets counterfeiting. The NAFDAC boss further illustrated how the agency raided 2 warehouses in Lagos allegedly owned by one Chuka Akuamia and discovered banned and falsified drugs estimated at 3 billion naira. Prof Adeyeye who further expressed worry at the incidence of Food Fraud in Nigeria said the nationwide operations which the agency commenced in July this year to address the trend has recorded tremendous success especially in the area of forfeiture of unwholesome processed cereals, beverages, and dairy products worth over 60 million naira. NAFDAC further warned the public against purchase of cereals or products that have been removed from their primary packaging. The Agency while explaining the rationale behind the raids of markets and supermarkets by it’s personnel said the move is inview of intelligence report indicating plans by importers to smuggle unregistered regulated Products during the festive period.
