Trade Union, NASS, Others Slam Nigeria’s Social Protection Cover

This was neither a social gathering nor a political rally but a high power interactive forum organised by the trade union to find lasting solution to challenges militating against social protection cover in Nigeria. The event attracted political leaders, policy makers and very important dignitaries from all sphere of life. Going straight to the business of the day, the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC accused Nigeria of having the least social protection coverage for citizens which makes them vulnerable to economic shocks, hunger, sicknesses, illiteracy among other adversities. The man of the moment, NLC President, Comrade Ayuba Waba disclosed this in Abuja while delivering his opening remark at a one day Roundtable on Social protection cover for workers. He said policies by Nigerian government reveals gaps and deficits especially in the informal sector from the contributory pension scheme, Health Insurance and National Housing Fund adding that it exposed failure of governments at all levels especially to honor Collective Bargaining Arrangements entered with organized Labour. The Speaker, Federal House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila said welfare of workers should remains the priority of the government as he assured that the legislative arm will do all within its power to ensure that the gab is bridged. Speaker after speaker share their views at the forum. The theme of the event is: Expanding Social Protection Cover and Ensuring Effective Implementation in Nigeria.
