The Federal Government has inaugurated an Inter Ministerial Committee on the recovery of illegally refined petroleum products in the Creeks of the Niger Delta Region. Solicitor General of the Federation and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Justice, Umar Mohammed who performed the inauguration in Abuja charged the committee to ensure transparent disposal of the product with due consideration to the environment. He however, noted that security operatives will be effectively used in the fight against crude oil theft in the Niger Delta Region. In his acceptance speech, the Chairman of the committee, Ibikunnle Olaiya assured that the committee will leave no stone unturned in achieving its mandates. The Inter-ministerial Committee is set up to implement mechanism known as Standard Operating Procedure for recovery of illegally refined petroleum products in the dug-up pit found around the creeks of the Niger Delta The Committee is comprised of representatives from Nigerian Army, Navy, Civil Defence Corps, Defense Headquarters, the Ministry of Justice among others.
