Nigeria May Lose It’s WPV Free Status As 13 states, FCT Report Outbreak Of Polio Virus – NPHCDA

Information from the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency NPHCDA indicates that no fewer than 13 states and the Federal Capital Territory have reported outbreak of the Circulating Vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2). This worrisome Development is coming 11 months since Nigeria was declared free of of the Wild Polio Virus (WPV). According to the NPHCDA Executive Director, Dr Faisal Shuaibu,the continuous spread of the virus in the affected states poses have health implications on the wellbeing of the people as well as a threat to the WPV free status which Nigeria attained in August 2020. Speaking at the second Quarter review meeting of the Northern Traditional Leaders Committee on Primary Health Care(PHC) delivery in Abuja, Dr Shuaibu was of the opinion that the development might have been triggered due to a high number of children left out during the conduct of outbreak response strategy using the Novelle Oral Polio Vaccine. Meanwhile, the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’adu Abubakar, Sultan of Sokoto represented by the Chairman, Northern Traditional Leaders Committee on Immunization on (PHC) Samaila Mera,the Emir of Argungu, in his remarks reiterated that it is not yet uhuru for Nigeria Nigeria even though certified WPV free. On his part, the UNICEF country Representative, Peter Hawkins, noted that nearly 2,000 children die daily as a result of low immunization, a situation that demands urgent attention of government. The States affected by the outbreak of the Circulating Vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 includes Abia, Bayelsa, Borno, Delta, Jigawa, Kano, Kebbi, Lagos, Niger, Rivers, Sokoto, Yobe and Zamfara.
