TCN Adds 635MVA Transformer Capacity To Strengthen South-South Power Transmission
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has added 635MVA of transformer capacity to its South-South network through strategic installations at substations within its Port Harcourt Transmission Region, in a move aimed at increasing bulk power delivery and improving transmission reliability.
The General Manager, Port Harcourt Region, Engr. Nasiru Bello, disclosed this in an exclusive interview with TCN Transmission News on October 1, 2026, highlighting major infrastructure upgrades, capacity expansion initiatives and ongoing projects to address transmission constraints across the region.
Engr. Bello said the additional capacity would enable the network to wheel more electricity and improve bulk power delivery to distribution load centres for onward supply to consumers.
The 635MVA capacity addition comprises one 125MVA power transformer at Port Harcourt Town Transmission Substation; two 125MVA transformers at Port Harcourt Main Transmission Substation; one 125MVA transformer at Alaoji Transmission Substation; one 75MVA transformer at Aba Transmission Substation; and one 60MVA transformer at Itu Transmission Substation.
Beyond the completed capacity additions, TCN is expanding its transmission infrastructure in the region. In the Calabar Sub Region, construction is ongoing at the 2x160MVA Ekori and 2x160MVA Obudu Transmission Substations, while the Ogoja Transmission Substation project is about 90 per cent complete.
Engr. Bello also disclosed that plans had been finalised for a new transmission substation in Oron, Akwa Ibom State, with site mobilisation and project execution expected to commence shortly.
He noted that the expansion drive is complemented by routine maintenance and asset rehabilitation across the region to improve equipment reliability, minimise avoidable downtime and reduce technical losses on the network.
According to him, these initiatives align with TCN’s broader mandate to expand and modernise Nigeria’s transmission infrastructure, strengthen network performance and improve bulk power delivery to distribution load centres across the South South and the country at large.
