Nigeria Seeks Increase in Hungary Scholarship Quota for Students

Nigeria’s Ambassador to Hungary, Engr. Abass Braimah, has appealed for an increase in the number of scholarship slots allocated to Nigerian students under the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Programme, describing the current quota as insufficient for a country of Nigeria’s population size.

The request was made during a working visit to the headquarters of the Tempus Public Foundation in Budapest, where Ambassador Braimah, accompanied by the Deputy Head of Mission and Minister Plenipotentiary, Mrs. Vivienne Ekwora Ogonyi, held talks with the Foundation’s Director-General, Péter Tordai, and Director of Study in Hungary, Orsolya Jánosik.

Discussions focused on expanding educational cooperation between Nigeria and Hungary through the Stipendium Hungaricum Programme, which enables Nigerian students to pursue studies at leading Hungarian universities.

Ambassador Braimah noted that Nigeria’s current allocation of 50 scholarship slots falls short of meeting the growing demand for international study opportunities among qualified Nigerian students. He urged Hungarian authorities to consider increasing the quota to provide greater access to the programme.

He also encouraged eligible Nigerians to take advantage of the scholarship scheme when applications open in November 2026.
The visit forms part of the Nigerian Embassy’s broader efforts to strengthen bilateral relations with Hungary and enhance educational opportunities for Nigerian students studying abroad.
