The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) and other stakeholders have begun coordinating plans for a temporary power outage and load diversion to facilitate the upgrade of Towers 27 and 28 on the Kumbotso–Dan Agundi 132kV transmission line in Kano State.

The plan was discussed at a coordination meeting held on Monday, October 5, 2026, at TCN’s Regional Conference Room in Kano, with representatives of the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), project contractors and the Kano State Ministry of Works in attendance.

The meeting was chaired by TCN’s General Manager, Transmission, Kano Region, Engr. M. K. Bello, who urged contractors to thoroughly assess proposed technical connections and switching arrangements before implementation to ensure operational safety and network reliability.

Bello expressed confidence in the contractors’ competence but stressed the importance of careful technical evaluation to prevent operational risks during the planned exercise.

In his remarks, NISO Regional Operations Coordinator, Engr. Kunle Egbedinni, emphasised strict compliance with the Grid Code, particularly the requirement to submit planned outage applications at least 14 days before the proposed exercise for approval.

Meanwhile, KEDCO’s Head of Operations and Maintenance, Engr. Sabiu Haruna, proposed diverting the load supplied by the Dan Agundi 132kV Substation to alternative facilities, including Dakata 132kV, Tamburawa 132kV, Rimin Zakara 330kV, Kumbotso 330kV and Wudil 132kV substations.

The proposed load diversion is expected to take place within a two day outage window, subject to the necessary technical assessments and approvals.

During the meeting, stakeholders examined the capacity of the alternative substations to accommodate the diverted load. They noted that Hadejia 132kV Substation could not accommodate the entire 60 megawatt load earmarked for diversion, prompting further consideration of supply options from Tamburawa, Rimin Zakara and Dakata substations.

Participants also underscored the need to safeguard personnel and equipment throughout the exercise.

The meeting ended with stakeholders pledging stronger inter-agency coordination, compliance with regulatory requirements and timely execution of the tower elongation project.
