The Federal Government has tasked vice-chancellors of Nigerian universities with strengthening regulatory compliance, transparency and accountability in institutional administration, stressing the need for effective governance and responsible management of resources to improve the quality and global competitiveness of the nation’s university system.

The Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Said Ahmad, gave the charge on Tuesday at the opening of the 2026 retreat of the National Universities Commission (NUC), which brought together vice-chancellors of federal, state and private universities in Abuja.

Ahmad said sustainable excellence in the university system required strict adherence to regulatory directives, transparent financial management and accountable leadership, noting that the challenges confronting higher education could not be addressed through isolated institutional efforts or regulatory pronouncements alone.

She urged university leaders to ensure transparency in financial management, procurement, recruitment, promotion, admissions, examinations and other institutional processes, while establishing clear institutional visions and measurable performance targets.

The minister also called for stronger collaboration among the NUC, university proprietors, governing councils, senates, staff, students, the private sector and development partners to advance reforms and improve institutional performance.

She said the adoption of emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, digital learning and data analytics, had created new demands for university governance, requiring appropriate policies to safeguard academic integrity, ethical conduct, data protection and responsible use.

Ahmad expressed support for a proposed communiqué at the end of the two-day retreat, saying it should contain agreed policy actions and institutional commitments backed by a post-retreat monitoring and feedback mechanism to ensure that deliberations translated into measurable improvements.

The retreat, themed “Enhancing Regulatory Compliance, Governance, Leadership, and Partnership in the Nigerian University System,” is designed to strengthen the relationship between the NUC and university managements, improve quality assurance and address longstanding and emerging challenges in the sector.

In his welcome address, the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee and Director of Research, Innovation and Technology Transfer at the NUC, L.M. Faruk, said the engagement provided an opportunity for university leaders and regulators to examine challenges confronting the Nigerian University System and develop practical solutions.

Faruk identified strengthening regulatory compliance and quality assurance, advancing good governance and transformational leadership, and building strategic partnerships as the retreat’s key objectives.

He said discussions would feature presentations by resource persons, interactive sessions and deliberations on cross cutting and institution specific issues affecting universities across the country.

The committee chairman urged participants to engage constructively and develop actionable recommendations to improve university administration and the overall quality of higher education.

Both Ahmad and Faruk commended the NUC Executive Secretary, Professor Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu, for reviving the retreat, describing sustained engagement between the commission and vice-chancellors as essential to institutional development and effective regulatory oversight.

The retreat is expected to produce practical recommendations on governance, leadership, regulatory compliance and partnerships to strengthen the Nigerian University System.
