On August 15th, 1947, India got its freedom from the British government.
Eight years down the line, the country is celebrating this monumental milestone with Pomp and pageantry across the world.
Reading the anniversary address on behalf of President Droupadi Murmu, to Indian diplomatic missions, diaspora communities and guests in Nigeria, India High Commissioner, Abhishek Singh outlined the country’s transformative vision.
Despite economic milestones taking center stage in the message, the country Celebrated its position as the world’s fastest-growing major economy, President Murmu said its growth trajectory has continued to outpace global averages, backed by digital infrastructure that accounts for over half of all real-time digital transactions worldwide.
She highlighted India’s commitment to the Global South, environmental leadership through renewable energy, and a firm stance on national security, noting strategic counter-terrorism measures and significant reductions in internal security challenges like Naxalism.
On social welfare front, the President Murmu noted that over 250 million citizens have risen out of poverty, supported by flagship programmes that led to the opening of nearly 590 million bank accounts with more than half belonging to women.
The President who acknowledged key strides in women’s empowerment also used the occasion to praise Indian female athletes for securing eight of the nation’s 13 gold medals at the recent Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Guests at the occasion also witnessed cultural displays as part of programme put up to celebrate India’s 80th Independence Day.
