The Federal Government says the gradual adoption of Computer-Based Testing (CBT) by the National Examinations Council (NECO) is strengthening efforts to curb examination malpractice, as over 1.38 million candidates sit the 2026 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) nationwide.
Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, stated this after monitoring the ongoing examination at Redeemers Teap International School, Garki II, and Anglican Girls’ Grammar School, Gudu, in Abuja.
She said observations from the examination centres showed that candidates had adapted well to the CBT format, with many describing it as more convenient and user-friendly than the traditional paper-and-pencil examination.
Prof. Ahmad, however, explained that the Federal Government would only proceed with a full transition to Computer-Based Testing after ensuring that the necessary infrastructure is available across the country, so that no candidate is disadvantaged regardless of location.
Meanwhile, NECO Registrar, Prof. Ibrahim Wushishi disclosed that a total of 1,378,048 candidates registered for the 2026 Senior School Certificate Examination nationwide.
He said the successful implementation of CBT is expected to further enhance the credibility, efficiency, and integrity of the examination process.

Prof. Wushishi also announced that the Council expects to release the 2026 SSCE results by the first week of September, or even earlier, due to the faster processing and marking made possible by the Computer-Based Testing system.
