The Director-General of the National Orientation Agency, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, has called on the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria to place the National Values Charter at the centre of accounting practice in Nigeria.

Speaking at the Abuja Accounting Week 2026, themed “Value Re-orientation and Professionalism: Cornerstone for Socio Economic Development,” Issa-Onilu, who was represented by the Director of Communication and Media, Mallam Bala Musa, described the accounting profession as a vital vehicle for promoting integrity, accountability, and transparency in the nation’s economic life.

He said sustainable development is driven not just by resources but by values, stressing that no nation can rise above the quality of its values.

Issa-Onilu noted that professionalism must go beyond technical competence and be rooted in character, reflected in honesty in reporting, discipline in practice, respect for due process, and a strong commitment to accountability.

He added that the National Values Charter was developed as a renewed social contract between government and citizens, anchored on mutual responsibility and a shared commitment to nation building.

According to him, integrating the charter into accounting practice would help nurture professionals who combine technical expertise with the ethical standards required for national transformation.

The NOA boss described the collaboration between the agency and ICAN as a strong signal that integrity, accountability, and merit remain non negotiable in Nigeria’s pursuit of sustainable development.

In his welcome address, the 15th Chairman of ICAN Abuja and District Society, Dr. Michael Nnachi Okpara, said the conference theme underscores the urgent need for professionals to reassess values, strengthen ethical standards, and recommit to principles that support sustainable development.

He urged chartered accountants to prioritise public interest and uphold the highest standards of integrity, excellence, and professional competence.

The event featured the presentation of a souvenir to the NOA Director-General and attracted participants from across the country, including accountants, tax practitioners, and media professionals.
