Nigeria Reaffirms Shift To Nuclear Energy For Development
The Federal Government of Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to the peaceful application of nuclear energy as a cornerstone for national development and energy security.
The Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, emphasized this position during a high-level meeting with the Chairman and CEO of the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC), Engr. Dr. Anthony Inalegwu Ekedegwa, at the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.
Strengthening International Nuclear Diplomacy
Ambassador Tuggar highlighted that while the Ministry of Foreign Affairs does not directly supervise the NAEC, it remains the primary gateway for Nigeria’s engagement with global nuclear governance. He noted that nuclear technology is now a central pillar of international relations, impacting energy security and global peace.
“There is a need for sustained institutional collaboration to strengthen Nigeria’s voice in international nuclear diplomacy,” Tuggar stated, specifically referencing Nigeria’s engagement within the United Nations and other multilateral frameworks.
Strategic Priorities: Healthcare, Agriculture, and Energy
During the briefing, Dr. Ekedegwa outlined the Commission’s current priorities, focusing on the country’s partnership with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The discussions centered on utilizing nuclear science to address critical needs in:
Healthcare: Advanced medical diagnostics and cancer treatment.
Agriculture: Improving crop yields and pest control.
Energy: Diversifying Nigeria’s energy mix through nuclear power infrastructure to support long-term economic growth.
Safety and Non-Proliferation
Both the Ministry and the NAEC acknowledged the necessity of aligning Nigeria’s nuclear aspirations with international safety standards and global non-proliferation commitments. The meeting concluded with a pledge to deepen the synergy between diplomatic and technical sectors to ensure Nigeria remains a responsible player in the global nuclear arena.
