Troops of the Joint Task Force (North-East) Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), have uncovered a significant cache of heavy ammunition concealed in a drainage channel in the Bulumkutu Railway area of Borno State.

The recovery, which occurred on January 2, 2026, resulted in the seizure of 1,270 rounds of 12.7mm ammunition warheads, alongside several live rounds and power banks.

According to a statement signed by by the Media Information Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, and made available to Channel Network Afrique, CNA indicates that the operation was triggered by a distress call from local residents who noticed suspicious metallic objects hidden within the drainage system.

Joint Security Response
Upon receiving the report at approximately 3:00 p.m., military personnel and the Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team mobilized to the site. The area was cordoned off to ensure public safety while experts assessed and evacuated the munitions.

“Preliminary safety measures were promptly taken to secure the site,” Lt. Col. Uba stated. “Efforts are ongoing to drain the channel to determine if any additional dangerous items are present.”

Logistical Setback for Terrorists
Security analysts suggest the recovery of 12.7mm ammunition typically utilized in heavy, vehicle-mounted anti-aircraft guns represents a major logistical blow to insurgent groups operating in the North-East.

The military noted that the find follows a week of intensified cordon-and-search operations aimed at neutralizing suicide bombers and restricting the movement of terrorist elements within the theatre.

Community Cooperation
The Headquarters of Operation HADIN KAI attributed the success of the operation to “actionable intelligence” and the proactive cooperation of the host community.

The military urged residents to remain vigilant and continue reporting suspicious movements, emphasizing that collective responsibility is essential for maintaining the current relative peace in the region.

No casualties were recorded during the recovery exercise, and the security situation in the Bulumkutu area remains calm.
