Ahead of the 2024 Edo State Governorship election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says the signing of the Peace Accord by political parties has been slated for Thursday, September 12.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, disclosed this during an extraordinary meeting with political parties held at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

Prof Yakubu who noted that the Peace Accord signing will be presided over by former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, said the decision to hold the meeting earlier than in previous elections is a strategic move to allow the Committee to monitor compliance by political parties and their candidates in the critical days leading up to the election.

The INEC further informed the party leaders that the meeting was convened to brief them on preparations for the September 21st Governorship election.

Responding on behalf of the political parties, the National chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Yusuf Mamman Dantalle, emphasized the importance of the Edo election in restoring confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process.

The signing of the Peace Accord will hold in Benin city, Edo state capital.
