For Ease Of Negotiation, ECOWAS Must Lift Sanctions On Niger- NEF

As the the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS imposed more sanctions on Niger Republic as a result of military takeover of the democratically elected government led by President, Mohamed Bazoum, some concern stakeholders have called for truce.

The Northern Elders Forum who lend their voice to the call on the Chairman, ECOWAS, President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria said lifting the sanctions will ease negotiations with the military junta headed by General Abdourahmane Tchiani as well as prevent war.

The Convener, NEF, Professor Ango Abdullahi, at a news conference in Abuja, emphasized that the safety of President Mohamed Bazoum and the return of constitutional order to Niger was non-negotiable but urged the ECOWAS to explore all diplomatic options.

Represented by the Forum’s spokesperson, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed said Coup plotters in Niger must accord due cognizance and respect to ECOWAS for peace to return.

The forum also called for a genuine resolution of the crisis for the overall benefit of the region.

Leader of the Niger military junta, General Abdourahmane Tchiani after meeting a delegation of Islamic scholars from Nigeria led by Sheikh Abdullahi Bala Lau agreed to hold direct talks as well as resolve a standoff with the regional bloc, ECOWAS.
