Thuggery: Call Your Supporters To Order, INEC Tells Politicians Ahead Off-Cycle Polls

The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC has appealed to political leaders to rein in on their supporters against indulging in thuggery ahead of the governorship elections scheduled to hold in Imo, Kogi and Bayelsa States. INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu made the appeal at the meeting with political parties on the ongoing review of the 2023 general elections in Abuja.

Yakubu also condemned the alleged use of incumbency power by some political parties to deny opposing parties and their candidates from accessing public facilities for media campaigns.

The INEC Chairman further disclosed that the Commission is looking at some of the lessons learnt from the 2023 general elections to improve its performance in the forthcoming elections.

Speaking on behalf of the other political parties, the National Chairman, Inter Party Advisory Council IPAC, Engr. Yabagi Sani commended the political parties that have gone to court to challenge the outcome of the election, appealing to the election petition tribunals not to base their decisions on technicalities.

Officials of the political parties that attended the meeting include the ruling All Progressives Congress, Peoples Democratic Party, Labour Party, Young Democratic Party among others
